Georgia Rides To The Capitol 2011
The 2011 event featured great weather with over 1,800 cyclists and more than 40 mayors and elected officials from 31 cities in the metro area. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle rode from Decatur with Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd, Decatur City Commissioner Fred Boykin and other officials. Gov. Nathan Deal addressed the cyclists at the Capitol and spoke on the obesity issue in Georgia and it’s long term ill effects on our population. Cycling is certainly one way to address this important issue. GA DOT Commissioner Vance Smith also spoke to the riders about better bicycling facilities in Georgia. It was a great event that helped bring about the successful passage of House Bill 180 - the Safe Passing Bill (Give 3 Feet). A big thanks to all who participated in this great event - cyclists, volunteers, sponsors, police, folks at the Capitol, the Georgia Municipal Association, etc. A ride like this could never happen without a lot of help!
